Reflections - Day 2

Day 2:

What did you do today?

I worked in a group to complete the construction of a water tower, which is supposed to be able to support weights. We then had a competition to see which group’s tower lasted under the heaviest weight.

What did you learn today?

I learnt how to design a structure to increase its stability and toughness, by adding supports at the base and having ‘X’ like structures between the main legs of the tower etc.

How do you feel about today’s activities?

I feel that it was enjoyable and that it was a unique experience, which has allowed me to work in a university-styled environment with its engineering lab in particular and the professors to assist you. I really appreciate the chance to explore slightly into the engineering course, which can give me a chance to evaluate my interests.

How may this discipline be applied elsewhere?

It can help in designing water towers worldwide to suit the particular environment, which can withstand heavy loads of water. It can also help in architectural design, particularly in constructing foundations.

Reflections - Day 1

Day 1:

  1. What sounds interesting about this project?

The thing that seems interesting is that this would be a competition, and it would be fun to have a challenge in this project.

  1. What do you think you can learn from this project?

I think I would be able to learn how to construct structures, in this case a water tower, which has to have good stability and foundations.

3. Any immediate questions regarding the project?

I would like to know how each variable affects the tower, and its purpose. I would also like to know how the water tower design is applied in daily life, and if there are any modifications for each unique and different environment where each tower is located.

First Plenary Session - Earthquakes

As for the first Plenary Session, I was unable to attend because I was participating in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad Competition in school.

Second Plenary Session - Animation and IT technology

For the second session, I learnt that we should not hesitate to invent, for anyone can be an inventor. I also learnt that the 2D traditional way of producing animation is still much appreciated. From this talk, its really inspired me by the way he said inventing was easy, which can motivate the audience.

Third Plenary Session - Nanotechnology

Finally the last session, I learnt about the vast opportunities and possibilities that nanotechnology has for the future. It also showed and introduced me to a whole different world that is all around us, but we just don’t take notice of.
